The main research directions of the Department - the various aspects of lexicology and phraseology; problems of modern translation and translation courses in professional communication (problem of the equivalence and the adequacy of the translation of legal acts and documents UN, international treaties and agreements, especially the translation of lexical and grammatical transformations); problems of intercultural communication; issues of political correctness.
Each year department organizes foreign language section on the traditionally scientific conferences held by the Law Institute of ISU. The section is known as «Some aspects of language and law» and its participants include lecturers of the department, the students of Law Institute, as well as invited speakers from other law schools of Russia and China. The working languages at such conferences are English, German, French and Chinese.
